What pet insurance do you recommend and why?

Im looking for pet insurance for my 2 month old american eskimo. Im comparing trupanion to pets best. What do you recommend?

There are different types of pet policies to choose from depending on your needs: Lifetime cover pays claims up to a set amount each year - this limit is reinstated each year for the pet’s lifetime; per condition cover pays claims up to a set amount per condition so when that limit is reached you can’t claim anymore for that condition; Time limited is similar to per condition but you can only claim up to a set period too (usually 12 months) and then that condition is excluded. helpucover.co.uk provides lifetime insurance – why not take a look at the website and see if it is the type of cover you are looking for. helpucover also offer a multi pet discount of one month’s free premium on each policy when insuring two or more pets.

These are two great options. If you haven't already, I suggest you take a look at the company compare chart on our (Trupanion) website.

A few good questions to ask when researching pet insurance are:
1. does the policy cover everything? Hereditary and congenital issues?
2. What are the payout limits? Will it be enough money for my worst case scenario?
3. how much does it cover for each condition?
4. What are the pricing and deductible options?
5. Is it an ongoing policy? If my pet has an illness during my first policy year, will it be covered the next policy year?

Some plans don't pay based on your actual bill, but have lists of predetermined dollar amounts that they will pay for each condition which can be shockingly low in many cases. I would recommend getting an actual insurance plan that covers based on your bill so that you are never faced with a difficult and expensive situation when you *thought* you were covered.

We cover 90% of the actual bill for diagnostic testing, treatments, surgeries and medications including emergency and specialist visits. Trupanion is also the only provider to offer a $0 deductible option.
Feel free to give customer service a call and get a no-obligation quote to ask all the necessary questions and find out what's best for you!

I have actually had both Trupanion and VPI (both companies that answered above) and I would go with Trupanion. VPI just has so many restrictions and how are you supposed to predict what your pet will develop? Trupanion also covers trips to the emergency vet and specialists at a straight 90%, where VPI will cover only what they think is 'reasonable'. Good luck with your decision! And good luck with your new puppy! American Eskimo dogs are so adorable!

Justs to give you another option - VPI is the oldest and largest pet insurer in the nation. we insure almost 500,000 pets, including over 1,000 American Eskimos. our Medical and Major Medical plans are designed to cover the illnesses and injuries your pet may encounter. we offer the maximum amount of coverage for the most affordable premium. we do this by using a benefit schedule that outlines exactly what is covered with your policy and how much we will reimburse you for your pet's claims.

When looking for a provider, some questions you should ask are:

- does the insurance cover the cost of the exam? (VPI does)
- If my pet gets sick in one policy term, will that condition still be covered in the next term? (It will with VPI)
- how often has the company increased premiums, and by how much? (VPI has set age bracket increases, but won't surprise you with outrageous price hikes because of "veterinary inflation")

To give you an idea of how pet insurance works, this would be the process if you were to file a claim with VPI:

1. Visit any Veterinarian - you can visit any licensed veterinarian worldwide. Simply pay for treatment at the time of service.

2. Submit your Claim - Fax or mail your claim form along with your invoices.

3. Receive Reimbursement - after meeting your policy’s deductible, you are reimbursed according to your plan’s benefit schedule allowance or the eligible invoice amount, whichever is less.

Good luck in your search, and feel free to ask us if you have any specific policy questions.

Pet insurance is usually more expensive than it is worth. I don't recommend it. http://zoocrewkids.blogspot.com/

Trainer, I admire your daughter's dedication. I too have raised a formerly abused dog - an American Eskimo... who still has fear issues. My comment about the cut ears was certainly not meant to offend you or your daughter. It's just a comment about how sick some people are that they treat animals like non-sentient beings, who are there for our pleasure and to cater to our whims.

Poor Violet having to endure the chop job that she did, and my hat's off to your daughter for her love and patience..*tips hat*
